Seng Huat Bak Kut Teh, Kepong

Whenever you ask any Klangite on the topic of the first and most authentic Bak Kut Teh restaurant in Klang, chances are they will tell you its the one "under the bridge". That automatically means Seng Huat BKT, which has been operating under the Klang Bridge for more than 40 years now. It has always been a family tradition for me to have BKT there for at least once a month but sadly, I have not been able to do that because of work commitments and moving out of Klang...and then, I found out they have a branch in Kepong, quite near to my office place now.

I have always been critical of franchised or branched out foods, just thinking of the millions of kopitiams mushrooming in the Klang Valley all claiming to offer "original" Ipoh white coffee gives me the shivers when one mentions franchise food. Which is why it took me more than a few months before stepping into this place, despite the place being less than 100 steps away from the office.

Upon entering the restaurant, me and my workmates were presented with a menu to choose our meats and vegetables, something unheard of in a proper Klang BKT shop. Urged by hunger, I decided to order on behalf of all of us, including my favorite sam chan yuk (belly meat), sui kut (small bones) and pun fei sau (fatty meat). Also, a bowl of golden mushrooms for good measure.

Our BKT arrived in a claypot, another distinctive difference from the original one in Klang, which serves their BKT in small bowls only. I was quite alright with this actually as I prefer claypots because it is easier to share and of course, more soup for us to enjoy. The taste of soup was slightly different from the original one, well in fact the soup was a little too weak for me, but my non-Klang workmates were OK with the taste. the meat was cooked well considering it was afternoon and they probably had the whole morning to bath in the hot soup. It's not too bad considering we were out of Klang.

The golden mushrooms were alright, though I didn't really enjoyed it (Klangnites don't take mushrooms with their BKT, heh).

In a nutshell, I wouldn't mind visiting the place again during lunch although it's not as good as the one in Klang. But what the heck, it beats driving all the way to Klang during lunchtime!Pricing is quite alright here, expect to pay about RM12 p.person for a decent meal.

Here's a map and business details of the place for you readers. Seng Huat kepong is located inside Taman Usahawan Kepong, opposite Jusco Kepong. Keep a copy of the map below though as it is well hidden inside the area.

doggyjames says...Above average BKT considering it is out of Klang, definitely a good lunch place for folks working in Kepong.
