Ah Sang Bak Kut Teh, Sungei Way PJ

Being to a new job means one thing to me: new location to discover good food. Imagine my joy when I landed a job in Sungei Way! One thing comes to mind when one mentions Sungei Way: Bak Kut Teh.

One of the best places for Bak Kut Teh outside Klang for me is this humble little place, Ah Sang BKT located just a few minutes away from my new office (yipee!). Though it is no where near as awesome as my favorite ones in Klang, it still hold up against many of the other BKT shops out there. Plus the setting is really nice and old school, one would easily think one is in Klang when dines here.

The soup here belongs to its own league to me. Far different from the ones in Klang which I am accustomed to, the soup here has a really rich herbal taste which some might even find little bit too bitter. Fine for me though. The meat is really fresh and cooked to tender perfection. Another good thing here is that they offer oily rice as well, similar to the ones in Klang at no extra cost!

And of course, intestines are a must at any BKT experience :)

A portion of Bak Kut Teh person here would set you back RM9, without any extras.

Here's a map for you readers. If you are familiar with LDP and the areas near Icon City PJ, Ah Sang is located opposite the Hindu temple in Sungai Wey. Parking's a bitch but its worth it ;)

Ngau Kee Beef Noodles, Tengkat Tong Shin KL

One of the best things about the drinking scene in KL is one would be spoiled for choices when it comes to after drinking supper choices. However with the new fast food restaurants, new age Middle Eastern cafes mushrooming in the city center, it's good that some of the more traditional street food are still in operation and frankly, doing quite well.

One of such places is Ngau Kee Beef Noodle stall in Tengkat Tong Shin, just next to Changkat Bukit Bintang where I always grab a pint or 5 from. And 7 out of 10 times after a barrage of pints I'll head on to Ngau Kee, which is less than a 5 minutes walk away from CBB. Don't expect air-conditioned rooms or post leather seats, it's just a simple roadside set up with a few plastic chairs and tables scattered around the stall itself.

Beef noddles here are similar to those served at Song Kee. Dry Noodles with your choice of noodles (normally loushu fun, hor fun or thin yellow noodles) with a generous splash of meat sauce made with mainly soy sauce and minced pork which you'd mix by yourself. U do get the standard bowl of pork meatball in clear broth as well, and if you want, do order extra portions of "spare parts" parts e.g. tribe and liver!

after mixing

awesome pork balls are ossum

A small portion of standard noodle here starts from RM6 and comes in medium & large servings as well. Options to add more parts into your noodles are available of course, for a fee. Not too shabby and definitely better than a bucket of fried chicken for after drinks meal hehe. Prices in detail as below:

Here's a map for you readers. If you are coming from CBB, just head into the small junction beside Radius Hotel, parallel to Jalan Alor. Walk down the road pass a few budget inns and it should be on your right. Sit down, enjoyz :D

Seng Huat Bak Kut Teh, Kepong

Whenever you ask any Klangite on the topic of the first and most authentic Bak Kut Teh restaurant in Klang, chances are they will tell you its the one "under the bridge". That automatically means Seng Huat BKT, which has been operating under the Klang Bridge for more than 40 years now. It has always been a family tradition for me to have BKT there for at least once a month but sadly, I have not been able to do that because of work commitments and moving out of Klang...and then, I found out they have a branch in Kepong, quite near to my office place now.

I have always been critical of franchised or branched out foods, just thinking of the millions of kopitiams mushrooming in the Klang Valley all claiming to offer "original" Ipoh white coffee gives me the shivers when one mentions franchise food. Which is why it took me more than a few months before stepping into this place, despite the place being less than 100 steps away from the office.

Upon entering the restaurant, me and my workmates were presented with a menu to choose our meats and vegetables, something unheard of in a proper Klang BKT shop. Urged by hunger, I decided to order on behalf of all of us, including my favorite sam chan yuk (belly meat), sui kut (small bones) and pun fei sau (fatty meat). Also, a bowl of golden mushrooms for good measure.

Our BKT arrived in a claypot, another distinctive difference from the original one in Klang, which serves their BKT in small bowls only. I was quite alright with this actually as I prefer claypots because it is easier to share and of course, more soup for us to enjoy. The taste of soup was slightly different from the original one, well in fact the soup was a little too weak for me, but my non-Klang workmates were OK with the taste. the meat was cooked well considering it was afternoon and they probably had the whole morning to bath in the hot soup. It's not too bad considering we were out of Klang.

The golden mushrooms were alright, though I didn't really enjoyed it (Klangnites don't take mushrooms with their BKT, heh).

In a nutshell, I wouldn't mind visiting the place again during lunch although it's not as good as the one in Klang. But what the heck, it beats driving all the way to Klang during lunchtime!Pricing is quite alright here, expect to pay about RM12 p.person for a decent meal.

Here's a map and business details of the place for you readers. Seng Huat kepong is located inside Taman Usahawan Kepong, opposite Jusco Kepong. Keep a copy of the map below though as it is well hidden inside the area.

Sumi-Ka Yakitori Restaurant, SS15

SS15 is slowly known to the general public as a hidden haven for authentic Japanese cuisine. With so many Japanese expats and retirees setting up shops in the area, dozens of Japanese restaurants would give any dedicated foodie a tough time choosing a place for a good meal. Sumi-Ka is one of such places, which serves real good authentic Japanese yakitori or barbeque skewers.

Sumi-ka has that old time traditional Japanese yakitori shack feel, if you've been to Japan or even watched any travel shows showing traditional Japanese cuisines. The place is small with limited seatings, so telephone booking is a must if you want to have a meal there with a few friends in any given day. Any like any decent Japanese restaurant, there is a large selection of Japanese sake, shoju and cold local and imported Japanese beer.

Me and my bunch of food loving friends reserved a place by the open kitchen, where one would have a great view of cooking action live from the boss himself, Ota-san The place is really energetic, with screams of welcoming to guest and energetic cries from the kitchen whenever an order is made/food is served.

It is best to order food directly through the waiters without looking at the menu, just ask the waiter whats the special of the day and he/she would recommend what cuts of meat or vege you should have. Unlike most modern establishments, the waiters here are all locals who speak perfect Japanese and would make the best recommendations for you.

We started off with Miso Soup and Baked Onigiri. The soup was really flavourful and remember to tell the waiter how thick you like your soup to be, I had mine extra thick. The baked onigiri was done really well, on par with those sold in Japan.

Then came the army of beef skewers. The different cuts and marinated bits of beef were all very very good. The meat was flavorful and tender, the marinates done just right and if you are lucky, they would have beef tendons in stock which I absolutely adore. The must have however, would be the miso marinated beef ribs. These are slightly more expensive than the other items but trust me, you would remember the experience for life.

The pork belly here is a must have too. fatty, aromatic with a nice portion of lean meat on it, the taste is simply magnificent. We tried the bacon wrapped garlics and pork & fish eggs which was sublime as well.

Another interesting dish here is the chicken soft bones. chewy, full of roasted chicken flavours and perfect with the in house chili powder.

Pigeon eggs, prawns and ginko nuts were great too. Simply seasoned with imported Japanese salt, the taste was simply amazing.

Dinner was completed with a serving of caramel pudding. I was on a no dessert diet yet it looked so amazingly simple and yummy. The comments were great! Not too sweet with just the right amount of caramel.

Each skewer would set you back RM4-7 depending on what you order. The beef are pricier from RM9 and above. Do ask for the daily chef's specials as well. Be careful on the amount though as a meal would be really expensive. We spent about RM80 per person there without any alcohol.

Here's a map and details of the place for you readers. Sumi-Ka is located along Jalan ss15/4, right above a laundry shop. Parking's a bitch but its worth looking for one :D

T-Bowl Concept Restaurant, Sunway Pyramid

So T-Bowl Restaurant, which I guess borrows its name and idea from Modern Toilet has landed in Malaysia a few months back. Being a great lover of funny ideas, I have always wanted to try the food there ever since I heard the news and finally, after almost a year of waiting, me and a friend finally got there for a pre-movie lunch one fine afternoon.

One would immediately be attracted by the restaurant's funky designs, mainly using toilets and bathroom equipments and its bright colours. It was a really nice change in terms of ambiance for me from the usual brown wooden walls and white concrete floors. Even the seats were made from (I hope not used) toilet bowls, funny would be the least of my thoughts, haha.

Heck, even the menu has a toothbrush!

We started the meal with drinks first, Mango Yogurt Shake (RM6.90) and White Coffee with Grass Jelly (6.90). Taste-wise they are alright, much like what you'd get in one of them HongKong theme cafes like Kim Garry.

I ordered the Cheese Baked Rice (RM14.90) which has braised pork belly, minced pork, chicken floss and half a stewed eggs on top of white rice. The meal was served in a potty but seriously, I did not laugh. The presentation looks a little too...normal for me. Tastewise its OK by best, I had better braised pork. The cheese lacked taste as well.

My lunchdate ordered the Chicken Chop Rice, which comes with an odd piece of scallop on the shell. No toilet bowl this time, just a plate shaped like a toilet bowl lid. The chicken was tasteless to be honest, and the fried rice lack any taste as well. A total disappointment.

The only thing good we had here was the ice cream. The ice cream itself is thick and really flavourful, while the generous amount of fruits were fresh and tasty.

Satisfied? Yes with the deco and ice cream, food were really disappointing.

T-Bowl is located in the new wing of Sunway Pyramid, next to TGIF and Ninja Joe, near the Nike concept store. You dont really need a map and address to Pyramid, do you?
